Swabs, pipe cleaners and brushes handle precision cleaning for your favorite banger, bowl, dab rig or bong. There is a set of jobs that chemistry alone that liquid cleaners never finishe: the residue ring inside a banger, the film in a nectar collector tip, the packed gunk in a bend too tight for liquid to flush. Those need something physical to wipe them out.

The habit that matters most is also the smallest one. A swab through a banger while it is still warm, right after the dab, takes about three seconds and prevents nearly everything that a deep clean later would have to fix.

Swabs for bangers, nails and small bores

Cotton and foam tips sized for the inside of a banger, a nectar collector tip or a small rig joint. The head needs to fit the bore snugly enough to wipe the wall on the way past, which is why the size matters more than the material.

Cotton tips absorb more and are the better choice for wet residue while the quartz is still warm. They shed fibers if you force them into a bore that is too narrow, so size up the swab or size down the ambition.

Foam tips hold their shape under pressure and leave nothing behind, which makes them better for a cold, tacky residue that a cotton head would just smear. They absorb less, so expect to use more of them on a wet job.

Slim and long-stem versions exist for terp slurper channels and narrow air paths where a standard head simply will not enter. If a swab needs forcing, it is the wrong swab.

Pipe cleaners for bends and stems

Flexible wire cores wrapped in bristle or soft fiber, made to be pushed through a path that does not run straight. Downstems, hand pipe channels, one-hitters and the elbow of a bubbler are all shapes where a rigid brush stops and a pipe cleaner keeps going.

Bristled versions scour and are what a resin-packed downstem needs. Soft versions absorb and polish, and are for a final pass or for a material you do not want scratched. Both bend to hold a shape, so you can pre-form a curve to match the piece before it goes in.

Wire cores are the thing to watch. A cleaner pushed hard into glass with the wire exposed at the tip will scratch, so trim or fold the end if the wrap has worn back.

Brushes for chambers and joints

Nylon bristle brushes in the diameters that actually correspond to real pieces: small heads for bowls and joints, wider heads for beakers and chambers, long handles for anything you cannot reach past the neck.

Nylon is the default because it scours resin without scratching borosilicate. Keep metal-cored brushes away from the inside of glass unless the core is fully sheathed, and keep any brush away from a printed or plated finish.

Matching the tool to the bore

Most frustration with detail tools comes from reaching for the wrong size, not the wrong type.

Joints come in 10mm, 14mm and 18mm as the common standards. A brush head should compress slightly going in, not slide loose and not need forcing.

Banger buckets want a swab head that contacts the wall the whole way around. Too small and it polishes the middle of the floor while the ring of residue stays exactly where it was.

Terp slurpers and narrow channels need the slim swabs specifically. A standard head will not enter, and forcing one packs the fibers into the channel instead of clearing it.

Downstems want a pipe cleaner rather than a brush in most cases, because the bore is long, narrow and often slotted at the end.

What size swab do I need for my banger?

Match the swab head to the bucket so it contacts the wall the whole way around as it turns. Why does my banger still look dark after swabbing?

Swabbing removes wet residue, but it cannot remove carbon that has already bonded to the quartz. Once a banger has been run hot and left dirty, the darkening is chazzing, and it is permanent. Prevention is the only cure: swab while the quartz is still warm, before the residue has a chance to carbonize.

What brush size fits a 14mm or 18mm joint?
