Liquid Cleaners
A liquid cleaner does chemically what scrubbing does mechanically. Pour it in, seal the openings, agitate for a minute, and the resin lifts off the glass in one pass. No brush goes near the inside of the piece, which matters on anything with a percolator, a recycler arm or a chamber too narrow for bristles to reach.
The trade-off is that formulas differ more than the bottles suggest, and the wrong one either takes three rounds to do the job or damages the piece it was poured into.
Solvent, natural and abrasive formulas
Solvent-based. Alcohol or acetone-driven, and the fastest option on heavy carbon. These clear a badly neglected piece in a couple of minutes and are the right call when resin has hardened into a shell. They are also the formulas that damage acrylic, silicone and painted finishes, so they belong with glass and metal only.
Natural and citrus-based. Built around plant-derived solvents and enzymes instead of harsh chemistry. They work more slowly and want a longer dwell, but they are safe on a wider range of materials, smell better, and are the sensible choice for a piece cleaned on a regular schedule rather than rescued from neglect.
Abrasive-suspended. Grit held in a liquid base, so agitation does the scouring where the chemistry alone would stall. Effective on stubborn buildup in wide chambers. Keep them off soft materials and anything with a printed or plated finish, since the same grit that scours resin also scours coatings.
Concentrates. Diluted before use, which brings the per-clean cost down significantly if you are cleaning often. Worth the arithmetic on a daily piece and pointless on an occasional one.
How to use a liquid cleaner
Pull the bowl and the downstem out first and clean them separately. They collect more resin than the body does, ground joints trap it in the seams, and leaving them in means the cleaner spends its strength on the dirtiest parts instead of the chamber.
Pour enough cleaner to reach the resin line, seal the joint and the mouthpiece with caps, then agitate. Most fast formulas need one to two minutes of steady shaking. Natural formulas want five to ten, or a longer soak with occasional agitation. Heavy buildup wants a soak rather than a harder shake, since time does more than force.
Rinse with warm, not hot, water until no cleaner smell remains. Thermal shock cracks glass, so let a piece that has been sitting in warm cleaner come down before it meets cold water. Dry before the next use.
Reusing cleaner, and knowing when it is spent
Most liquid cleaners survive several cleanings. Pour the used cleaner back through a funnel into the bottle and keep going until it stops working. A formula is spent when it darkens to near-opaque, when the resin stops lifting on the first pass, or when it needs a second round on a piece that used to take one.
Keep the cap on between uses. The active ingredients in solvent formulas evaporate, and a bottle left open loses strength sitting on a shelf without ever cleaning anything.
Which formula for which job
For a glass bong cleaned weekly, a natural formula keeps up without any risk to the piece. For glass that has gone months without attention, start with a solvent, and expect two rounds. For anything silicone, acrylic or printed, skip solvents entirely and use a formula rated for that material. For a percolated piece, liquid is not just easier than a brush, it is the only thing that reaches the slits at all.

Before you buy
Match the formula to the dirtiest piece you own and the most delicate material you own, and if those point in different directions, buy two. A solvent for the glass and something gentler for the silicone costs less than replacing a piece you cleaned with the wrong bottle.
